There is something called “Broccomole,” which I can only imagine is guacamole made with broccoli, and something else called “Airline Chicken Breast,” and both of things sound quite frankly too self-punishing for Wilde to ever have gotten on board with. There are a couple of clearly UK-inspired dishes like “Banger in a Blanket” (wrapped in puff pastry, American-style, instead of in bacon like the Brits do) and “Cottage Pie,” but even the “Wilde Burger” is simply a burger topped with, of all things, American cheese. You might expect Irish cuisine, but that’s largely not what you’ll find, unless there is a Gaelic origin I’m unaware of behind calamari, sesame kale Caesar salad, or schnitzel. It’s with the food that the menu really runs into trouble. True, they only gave us one drink menu because they had somehow run out (on a Wednesday night with a half-empty space), but I enjoyed my Bee’s Knees (gin, honey, and lemon) anyway. It still suffers from the bar’s lack of clarity-there’s a Victorian section, a Prohibition section, a “Wise Guys” section (including a drink called “My Bookie’s Wife’s Cocktail”), and a Seasonal section-but at least all four look and taste good. The cocktail menu is Oscar Wilde’s high point. (Also, their website boasts: “Mens room based on Leslie Castle in Ireland where Paul McCartney got married,” so…there’s that. The whole thing had a general aura of “Is it kinda old? Chuck it on the mantelpiece! Any mantelpiece!” And the building’s historical antecedents don’t explain why the sound system alternated between The Best of Glen Miller and classic rock, or why the ladies’ room had an old time-y wireless in it playing what appeared to be a WWII-era broadcast. It’s the sort of hyperlocal humor that, particularly in LA - which is not one city but many, and vast, and often lonely - helps bind the place together, reminding us of our common, shared experiences, like losing our car in a mall parking lot. The absolute horror and confusion brought about by the Galleria’s parking structure is also a running joke on the Americana at Brand Memes account, a popular parody Twitter account that goofs on not just the Americana, but the Galleria and other malls throughout Los Angeles, as well as countless other extremely specific details about living in LA. Specifically, its many-leveled, labyrinthine parking garage where - once, and never again - I forgot to take a photo of where I’d parked my car and ended up walking from floor to floor, pressing my keys and trying to hear it honk for - and I’m not even exaggerating one little bit here - two hours and 50-some-odd minutes. When I consider the aesthetics of lostness, Jerde’s Galleria immediately springs to mind. When it opened, in 1976, the Galleria’s principal designer, Jon Jerde, was heavily influenced by an essay by the novelist Ray Bradbury, published in The Los Angeles Times WEST Magazine and titled “Somewhere to Go.” For another Jerde mall, in San Diego, Bradbury even wrote a manifesto of sorts called “The Aesthetics of Lostness” - a phrase that, as the writer Andrew O’Hagan recently put it, “still provides the best definition of the ambience of shopping malls, a feeling of comforting distraction and exciting misplacedness akin to foreign travel.” Part of this image of the Galleria as somehow lower status than the Americana is simply that it’s an older mall, from an older era of mall design and philosophy. In the 1980s teen rom-com movie version of this, it was like the most attractive, high-achieving girl in high school - Din Tai Fung - suddenly dating someone - the Galleria - from a whole different social clique the Lloyd Dobler of malls. ![]() This was odd - definitely unexpected - and great gossip for a certain type of Angeleno who is aware of both the Americana and the Galleria and the garlic green bean situation at Din Tai Fung. Late last summer, as Caruso’s campaign was gearing up to spend more on local TV ads than any mayoral candidate in the city’s history, word got out that Din Tai Fung was leaving Caruso’s biggest mall (in square footage), the Americana. But Glendale: Glendale’s got more Armenians than almost anywhere but Armenia and also, malls.Ĭentral Avenue divides the two malls, the Galleria on the left, and the Americana on the right. These cities are - again, unfairly - given a kind of shorthand: Santa Monica’s got beaches West Hollywood’s got good nightlife and (relatedly) the gays Studio City’s got… a studio? So does Burbank. For example, my 101-year-old grandmother, a native Angeleno, still calls Glendale “Dingledale” and still complains about briefly living there about eight decades ago. ![]() Glendale, like other cities within the Greater LA region, is often unfairly provincialized. I’m on board. Okay, instead of asking you more questions you may not know the answer to (especially if you are reading this article to get answers to your own questions), how about I answer a few? Well, considering that the full name of the product mentions both “apple” and “cinnamon,” it’s safe to assume both flavors will be represented. So, how does this work? Do new Apple Jacks Pop-Tarts taste like apple? Apple cinnamon? DO THEY HAVE APPLE JACKS INSIDE?!? No, actually don’t-I’m not being sarcastic, because this new flavor actually sounds great. But it’s fine, Kellogg’s, don’t listen to me. I gotta say, it’s almost like Pop-Tarts is running out of original flavor ideas, which is bonkers, because I just gave them a whole bunch of those a couple weeks ago (please, please give us black sesame Pop-Tarts). Or, more completely, Apple Jacks Frosted Apple Cinnamon Flavor Pop-Tarts. This month, another new (but not actually new) Pop-Tarts flavor will start hitting shelves: Apple Jacks Pop-Tarts. In late 2021, everyone’s favorite toaster pastry brand launched an Eggo waffle flavor that people generally seemed to enjoy. When rolling out dough that has been chilled overnight, give it about 30 minutes to soften on the counter. When it comes to drawing inspiration from other breakfast treats, you could say Pop-Tarts is a cereal offender (sorry). Pie dough needs time to rest the shortest length of time I would chill my dough before using it is 30 minutes. ![]() I advise creating the pop tart dough the evening before baking. Spread the frosting with a little spatula after spooning it onto the tops of the pop tarts. For thicker frosting, add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar, and for thinner frosting, add a teaspoon of milk at a time. It’s time to add the icing or glaze after the pop tarts have cooled! In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and stir until combined.Transfer the pop tarts to a wire rack to finish cooling. For five minutes, place the pan on a cooling rack. ![]() Bake for 25 to 28 minutes, or until tops and edges are lightly brown. Remove the dish from the refrigerator, then lightly egg wash the tops of the pop tarts. Put the pop tart tray in the refrigerator for 25 minutes to cool the dough.Next, carefully poke a few air holes over the top layer’s center. As a result, lines will be indented all the way around the pop tart. To push the top dough into the foundation, use the tines of a fork to press around the pop tarts’ edges. Put the tops on each pop tart base that has a filling on it.Level slightly to form a rectangle while remaining in the middle and avoiding pushing outwards. Then, top the middle of each pop tart base with a level tablespoon of the apple pie filling. Brown sugar and flour are combined in a small bowl. Each of the 9 pop tart bases’ tops should be lightly eggwashed (this will help the top dough to stick to the base and seal in the filling). Take the baking sheet out of the refrigerator. When the entire batch of dough has been sliced, preheat the oven to 350☏ (180☌).With the second half of the dough, repeat the rolling and cutting. To keep the dough cold, put the tray in the refrigerator. On a sizable baking sheet covered with parchment paper, arrange the 9 rectangles. The rectangle should now be divided into 9 equal sections, each measuring 34 inches. ![]()

AXE5400, for example, means Wi-Fi 6 (AX), Wi-Fi 6E (E) and 5400 Megabits per second maximum performance.īut measuring performance in aggregate like this doesn’t mean much because your Wi-Fi device can only connect to one band at a time. Wi-Fi manufacturers typically use big numbers, adding up the performance potential of the total number of streams a router supports across all its bands to come up with a number like AX3000 or AXE5400 to denote a product’s performance. Wi-Fi 6 routers support at least two streams per band, but four is typical for higher-performance models. A stream is basically a connection between a Wi-Fi router and a device it’s communicating with, and the more streams that link the two, the faster data can be transferred between them. Regardless of what standards a Wi-Fi router supports, the number of streams it provides per band determines the highest potential performance it can deliver to a Wi-Fi device. But some Wi-Fi 5 or 6 routers advertise themselves as “tri-band” because they provide one 2.4 GHz and two 5 GHz networks, so be aware that a tri-band router doesn’t necessarily mean it supports Wi-Fi 6E. Note: a Wi-Fi 6E router is by definition “tri-band” (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz). (Most of our recommendations offer Wi-Fi 6E.) But if you want to be forward thinking and get a Wi-Fi router well suited for the smartphones, tablets, and streaming devices you’ll likely purchase over the next several years, then a Wi-Fi 6E router is the best choice. ![]() The standard is new enough that there aren’t a ton of Wi-Fi devices that support Wi-Fi 6E just yet (Wi-Fi 6E was only adopted in 2020). So while you want Wi-Fi 6, do you absolutely need Wi-Fi 6E? Arguably, no. Many (but not all) Wi-Fi 6 routers today also support Wi-Fi 6E. That said, 6 GHz offers the best performance of the three Wi-Fi bands, but the same laws of physics apply so it has the least range, too. This additional 6 GHz band is even wider than 5 GHz, opening up even more capacity and speed for Wi-Fi devices. ![]() Wi-Fi that operates on this new 6 GHz band is called Wi-Fi 6E (E for Extended). Thankfully, the Wi-Fi standard is backward-compatible with its predecessors, so you won’t have to worry about your existing devices not working with a new Wi-Fi router.įor decades, Wi-Fi networks could only operate on 2.4 or 5 GHz bands, but now there’s a third band available, at 6 GHz. It also does so with far less latency, or lag, especially important for online gaming or streaming 4K video versus browsing the Web or sending e-mail. Like Wi-Fi 4, Wi-Fi 6 operates at both 2.4 and 5 GHz, but due to more efficient encoding and other technical enhancements, it can squeeze a lot more data into a Wi-Fi signal than its predecessors. If you’re buying a Wi-Fi router today, you'll want one that supports the most recent standard, Wi-Fi 6 (also known as 802.11ax). Wi-Fi 4 operates in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, while Wi-Fi 5 operates only in the 5 GHz band. Had your current Wi-Fi router for more than a few years? It probably supports Wi-Fi 4 (also called 802.11n), which was introduced in 2008, and/or Wi-Fi 5 (also known as 802.11ac), which was introduced in 2014.
